The 27 Constellations or Nakshatras:

There are 12 zodiacs (each 30 degrees), if the sky (360 degrees) is divided into 12 equal parts. Similarly on dividing the sky into 27 equal parts, we get the 27 Constellations or Nakshatras (each 13 degrees and 20 mins).

A 28th Nakshatra known as the Abhijit Nakshatra, is important for deciding auspicious timings or 'Shubh muhurts'. The Moon travels across each Nakshatra for roughly a day, while completing its roughly 28-day cycle.

The Nakshatra in which the Moon was placed when we were born, is our birth Nakshatra.
